Within Woodford County, Kentucky lies the city of Versailles, which makes up a portion of the Lexington-Fayette Metropolitan area. Records from the 2010 census show that the region has 8,568 inhabitants who reside on the city’s 2.8 square miles of total land. It is considered a portion of the Bluegrass Region in the state and is well-known for producing thoroughbred horses and various other livestock.
Versailles is the primary location for the breeding and training of Standardbred racehorses, saddlebred pleasure horses, and thoroughbred horses. In addition to a number of farms for other breeds, the city contains over eighteen farms dedicated to raising thoroughbreds. The economy benefits heavily from the horse industry and the tourism that it brings. Another notable attraction for the city is the Woodford Reserve Distillery, which is a part of the Bourbon Trail.
Versailles was originally founded in the year 1792. The settlement was located on eighty acres of land, the owner of which was only a child. The guardian for the minor decided to name the area after Versailles, France in order to pay honor to General Lafayette. However, while the two cities share the same name, they are pronounced differently.
The earliest available census was conducted in 1800, and states that the town had a population of 172 residents. Although by 1810, the area quickly grew as the number of inhabitants increased by 184%. In current times, the growth of Versailles has been less rapid. Each year the growth rate is under 15%. The populace is mostly comprised of 25 to 44 year olds, as this age segment is the largest and accounts for 29.4% of the total number of citizens in the city. The median age for residents is 37 years old.
While Versailles is well-known for horses, it also has been used as a backdrop for several movies. For the film Elizabethtown, almost every small-town scene was shot within the city. It was also used as the setting for Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. The 2010 movie Secretariat featured a scene that was filmed at a church in Versailles, as well.
The community has an immense amount of pride for the city. Careful consideration regarding development has helped to shape the town’s quaint reputation. The small town atmosphere has been fostered in order to make it a special place for residents to call home. While the city continues to celebrate the past, they are also trying to move towards the future by making efforts to improve local businesses. The citizens also strive to maintain the beauty of the rural landscape by keeping it safe and clean.
